Cannon Mountain ski resort. The roots of New Hampshire SkiingLooking back at Tafts while heading over to Mittersill.
Cannon Mountain ski resort. You may hear things like "it gets cold", "it is too windy". Waa waa waa. This is classic New Hampshire skiing and riding. Let the naysayers go somewhere else. One less person picking themselves up off the trail to slow down for when I am ripping down "Bypass" on my way to "Pauly's Folly" The reason for the tougher weather is this mountain has the highest elevation and vertical in NH. The Franconia Notch area is beautiful. There is nothing like a cruise down "Vista Way" with your kids or ripping down "Lower Hardscrabble" with some buddies. I have skied Cannon Mountain more than anywhere else in New Hampshire or even New England and have had some unbelievable days there. I don't mean the 20 below without the wind chill days on ice, but skiing in a fresh 2 feet. The terrain is top notch in New Hampshire for all types of skiers. Check out the trail map and mountain stats. For those that aren't skiers or riders a ride up the Cannon Mountain aerial tramway can be a thrill. There are not many people that are not skiing or riding it in the winter and it can be quite a thrill for the uninitiated in your group.
For those who are adventurous, a nice hike across the saddle from Cannon Mountain to the now defunct Mittersill is a must. I did it by myself one time at the end of the day and went too far left. I ended up on a road with no idea where I was. I had an idea which direction to go so I started walking. I hitchhiked down the only car that came by and the woman gave me a ride back to where we were staying. Thinking back on it, I am glad it was mid March so the daylight lasted longer. I suggest if you try it, go with a group and do it early. Update. Mittersill will be open with a shuttle back to the main mountain. There has been some brush clearing but they are trying to keep the skiing and riding experience as close to back country as possible. No lift until the 10/11 season.Cheap ski vacations can be easy to find at this mountain. The lift ticket prices are moderate compared to other New Hampshire ski areas but there always seems to be some kind of discount available. Ski magazine readers consistently give it top ranks in value. Cannon has no on mountain Condos and there is no huge hotel in the parking lot. However there are plenty of places within a short drive at decent prices. Check for great deals on lodging availability and book a trip to CannonAnd finally accessibility. A little further up 93 than a couple other resorts but right off the highway. Directions to Cannon Mountain
