What are the best family ski resorts?

Wow! Seems like just yesterday!

In my opinion the best family ski resorts question has no generic answer. You can look to the ski resort reviews in the skiing magazines for some ideas but I don't put much faith in these. I suspect that many of the submissions are from people that call one particular ski area their "home mountain" and that they do not travel to all the different mountains. I have no proof of this but it is a strong theory as the usual suspects with lots of on mountain condos usually show up.

Each family needs to decide what is right for them when planning their New England ski vacation. When it comes to skiing with my family, I prefer to go to the less crowded areas like Burke rather than huge areas with tons of nightlife like Killington. Ski resorts that are not ranked up there with the best ski resorts in America are often better for families and groups, and what I consider the best family ski resorts.

You need to consider the abilities of all family members. Do you have any children still too young to ski? Many people will take turns on the slopes instead of paying for daycare at the mountain when they have a child too young for skiing or riding.

Just about every resort offer lessons and childcare and to me they are pretty much the same. I found when my kids were younger and taking lessons the theory of smaller class sizes holds true. If your children are old enough and don't need any of these resources, the prime consideration should be what level skier or rider everybody is.

Terrain parks are very popular with kids but some of them are a little too intense. Check each mountains trail map to see if they have a mini-park. Most ski resorts now have have several parks. My kids will spend half of the day in parks but they do like to ski and ride the whole mountain especially gladed trails.

The kicker is off mountain stuff for kids. I think sometimes the places with nothing to do are great. We will play a boardgame (remember those) or if there is a pool at the place we are staying, we hang out there for a while.

All in all it is your choice as to what makes up the best family ski resorts. Do your homework on each mountain and decide what is right for you.
